What is Model United Nations?
Model United Nations is a simulation of the work in the United Nations. At Model United Nations you will be able to discuss current global topics and gain an insight into the work that takes place at the United Nations.
At Model United Nations you will be assigned a country, which you will represent and talk with other participants, who each represent a different country, and try to find common ground on the discussed topic.
Can I choose a country to represent?
During Gießen Model United Nations (GiMUN) the countries will be assigned by the organizing team and you can not choose your country.
When participating at National Model United Nations the delegation is able to make a list of countries which they wish the represent and the organization team of NMUN will then assign a country to our delegation.
Are there different committees at GiMUN?
Unfortunately, we will only have the General Assembly as a possible committee at the current point. It is possible that in the future we will have different committees to choose from.
What happens during the conference?
GiMUN will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday we will hold a workshop to give any new Model United Nations participants an overview of all the rules and a rough idea of how a working paper will have the best written.
On the other days you will be able to hold speeches, discuss and lobby with other delegates to come to a common ground regarding the chosen topic. On the last day we will give out the participation certificates, if you wish to receive one.
Can I be part of the delegation at NMUN?
If you wish to be part of the delegation at NMUN in New York in 2025 you will have to participate at GiMUN and show that you are willing to hold speeches and talk to others. Furthermore, you have to be a student at Justus-Liebig-University and you will have to take part in weekly colloquiums to prepare for NMUN.
Any further criteria for application can be found here: NMUN Application Information – Giessen Model United Nations.
What are the requirements for GiMUN and where can I register?
To take part at GiMUN should be able to communicate in English and register so a country can be assigned to you. Participation is free of charge.
You can register for GiMUN via our mail:
ModelUN@recht.uni-giessen.de
In this mail you should state your full name, field and semester of study (high school students should state their year and school), if you have any previous MUN experiences, and the consent to have your pictures taken and published on our website and Instagram account. Underage participants must have their parents consent to have their pictures taken and published.
Are there any fees to participate at GiMUN?
There are no fees to participate at GiMUN, therefore anyone is able to take part. Unfortunately we can not provide any reimbursements for travel expenses or accommodations.
Do I get a certificate for participation?
You receive a certificate for participating at GiMUN. Students of the fb01 are furthermore able to receive either a Fremdsprachenschein or a Schlüsselqualifikation, when applying you should state which you wish to receive. The only requirement for students of fb01 is a one-page position paper on the position of their assigned country.
What is the attire at GiMUN?
For GiMUN you should dress in business attire and refrain from any casual street wear. GiMUN takes the attire not as seriously as other Conferences, but a suit-jacket, white shirt and jeans remains the minimum. The „Anschlussverwendung“ in Gießen offers a clothing rack – where you are able to exchange clothes and perhaps find what you require for GiMUN.
Where will GiMUN take place?
The rules of procedure workshop will take place from 14:00 to 17:00 at the Law and Economics Campus of the Justus-Liebig-University (Licher Str. 68, 35394 Gießen). The conference on Saturday and Sunday will be at the Plenarsaal, Rathaus Gießen (Berliner Platz 1, 35390 Gießen).
